When she defeated Serena Williams earlier this year she gave us a glimpse of her thoughts behind the “fan girl” moment of meeting her idol. On Instagram, she posted the picture of her and Williams shaking hands with the caption “OMG.”

She is also gaining a reputation as an interesting quote with the media. While athletes usually rely on cliche answers when handling reporters, Osaka’s candor is a breath of fresh air. She once described the feeling of closing out her first singles title to being the “caveman Spongebob” meme. In the post-match press conference after defeating Williams, Osaka said she was happy her opponent yelled her signature “come on” rallying cry during the match because it was assurance Williams was giving 100 percent.
