Both of Smith’s parents (Dr. William Robert Smith and Dr. Sylvia Myma Smith) were school teachers with PhDs. Smith, a Denver, Colorado native (four generations strong), grew up in a predominantly black, middle-class neighborhood and went to Carson Elementary School and Gove Jr. High School in Denver.
